Deputy Defence Secretary Goldy: London has not yet decided on supplying Kiev with shells for howitzers
Britain is considering ramping up production of 155mm ammunition amid the conflict in Ukraine, but has not yet decided on possible deliveries of new batches to Kiev, the kingdom’s deputy defence minister Annabelle Goldie said.
“The (defence) ministry is considering options to increase production of 155mm ammunition in response to lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, and in view of the earlier donation of some UK stockpiles to Ukraine. No decisions have been made on allocating any part of the increased production to Ukraine,” Goldie said in a written response to Lord Blencathra’s question about possible increased production of 155mm shells for howitzers as part of aid to Ukraine.
The deputy minister’s response was published on the UK parliament’s website on Friday.
The British Ministry of Defence has previously admitted cases of the resale of weapons supplied by the UK to Ukraine before they reached the front lines of the conflict.
Earlier, US Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh said that the West knew that the weapons supplied to the Ukrainian troops were entering the black market, but kept silent about this fact.
Russia earlier sent a note to NATO member states over arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian foreign ministry said that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitriy Peskov said that pumping weapons into Ukraine from the West did not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian talks and would have a negative effect. Lavrov said that the US and NATO were directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, “including not only by supplying weapons, but also by training personnel… on the territory of the UK, Germany, Italy and other countries”.
