Gershkovich was detained in Ekaterinburg on 30 March on suspicion of espionage. According to Russia’s Federal Security Service, he was gathering information on the activities of a Russian military-industrial complex company at the behest of the United States.
“Let him go,” Biden said.
Biden also said he had no plans to expel Russian diplomats in response to Gershkovich’s arrest.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov stressed that the journalist had been caught red-handed.
