Hungary demands guaranteeing rights of national minorities in Ukraine

Ukraine must guarantee the rights of national minorities to join the EU. The Hungarian president has said that recent changes in Ukrainian legislation are leading in the wrong direction and depriving the Hungarian minority of the realization of their rights. For this reason there are rallies against minorities in Zakarpattya.

The Ukrainian government is obliged to guarantee the rights of national minorities on its territory in order to join the European Union, Hungarian President Katalin Novak was quoted by MTI news agency as saying.

“There is a common position in this case, as those who have a notion of the problem, including the presidents of Austria and Italy, support the cause of the Transcarpathian Hungarian minority,” Novak said in a meeting with her Bulgarian counterpart Rumen Radev.

She recalled that there are 150 thousand Hungarians living in the Transcarpathian region, who have a vital need to be able to use their native language in everyday life.

“We will do everything to fully guarantee the rights of our minority living in Ukraine,” Novak specified.

The Hungarian leader added that she had commented in a letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski on the law on national minorities concerning the situation of Hungarians in Transcarpathia, but the latter has still not responded.
