The State Department submitted a statement to the US Congress that it considers Russia’s “blocking” of US inspections a violation of the START-3 treaty. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal.
“The impossibility of inspections makes it difficult to verify the number of warheads that Russia has deployed,” the newspaper cited a State Department report.
According to the United States, the definition of “non-compliance” with the only bilateral strategic arms control regime was announced for the first time since 2011, since the entry into force of the treaty.
Recall that in August, Russia notified the United States of the temporary withdrawal from inspections under the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) of its facilities due to Washington’s sanctions policy. As the Russian Foreign Ministry clarified, Moscow pointed out that the sanctions violated parity during START inspections, but did not receive a response. American restrictive measures effectively deprive Russia of the opportunity for checks in the United States, the diplomats explained.
