The German government has officially stated its intention not to buy Russian liquefied natural gas. According to the Kiel Institute for World Economics Russian natural gas continues to reach the German market via Belgium. The German news outlet ZDF reported.
“Liquefied natural gas from Russia is transported to Belgium by ship. We believe that natural gas from Belgium goes straight to Germany,” said Stefan Kuts, vice president of the Kiel Institute for World Economics.
He states that in the European totals this gas is billed to Belgium, but does not reach it and goes directly to Germany. The volumes of gas, however, are small, around 5 billion cubic meters per year, which is, in principle, 5-6% of Germany’s main gas consumption.
The German newspaper adds that LNG deliveries from Russia to Europe have reached record levels.
Compared to 2021, the European Union, together with the UK, has purchased 20 percent more LNG from the Russian Federation, according to a report by Handelsblatt. The total amount of gas coming into Europe from Russia is 13 percent. Statistics show that the main gas buyers are France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
In 2022, European countries and the UK could pay about 27 billion euros for Russian LNG.
