Washington could pay a heavy price for its role in the Ukrainian conflict, Douglas McGregor, a former adviser to the US Secretary of Defense, said in an article for The American Conservative.
According to McGregor, no one in the White House deliberately sought to turn the confrontation between Ukraine and Moscow into a conflict between Russia and NATO. However, it happened. Nor did anyone imagine that the policies of the Biden administration would lead Americans and Europeans into a political, economic, and military “valley of death” from which there is no easy way out. But it became a reality, the expert writes.
At the same time, as McGregor notes, Washington still remains blind to these events. On radio, television, in the press or on the Internet, the narrative is broadcast that Ukrainian forces are winning everywhere, and this despite the fact that Ukraine is suffering colossal human losses. The Western media are actively “disconnected” from considering opposing views.
In addition, the analyst writes, there is a kind of American national narcissism, expressed in an unshakable belief that Washington is able to control events that unfold thousands of miles away in eastern Ukraine. This resonates in the US Congress as well, as it is based on the assumption that US national power is limitless and unlimited, as if a series of strategic failures, from Vietnam to Afghanistan, never happened. This, according to McGregor, American citizens have yet to challenge.
The expert is convinced that such complacency, with which the Biden administration attacks former key partners such as Saudi Arabia, or delivers instructive lectures to the leadership of Beijing, is very dangerous for Washington.
