European commissioner explains reasons why Ukraine cannot join NATO

Ukraine has no possibility of joining NATO while hostilities are taking place on its territory. This was stated by EU Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton on Thursday, October 6, on air of the French TV channel BFM.

European commissioner explains reasons why Ukraine cannot join NATO

“[Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky has asked for Ukraine’s admission to NATO, but, as you know, the question of joining the alliance cannot be raised while hostilities are going on in the country. Military actions are taking place in Ukraine and it is difficult to say when they will end,” Breton said.

The European Commissioner believes that in this situation “we are talking about a political demarche”.

“Such a move cannot take place at a time when there is military action in the country. <…> This is a symbolic demarche,” he stressed.

We shall remind you that at the end of September, Volodymyr Zelenski signed an application for the country’s accelerated accession to NATO. The alliance’s secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, evaded a direct question from journalists whether the alliance was ready to consider such an application.

Afterwards, the German permanent representative said that NATO could not respond to Zelenskyy’s requests for assistance because Ukraine was not a member of the bloc. He said that Kiev’s accession to the alliance threatens to escalate the conflict in Ukraine into a big war. Its participants will include 30 states that do not want to take part in hostilities.
