US again refuses to supply Kiev with modern tanks

The US believes that at this stage it is more appropriate to supply Kiev with old Soviet tanks rather than modern Western tanks. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia Affairs Laura Cooper told a Pentagon briefing.

US again refuses to supply Kiev with modern tanks

“We absolutely agree that the Ukrainians need tanks. I don’t have exact figures, but the US has been working with allies to support Ukraine with thousands of tanks and armoured vehicles. No doubt we see the need for tanks. In terms of immediate supply and redeployment, the easiest option is the Soviet-era tanks, which the Ukrainians already know how to operate and, more importantly, know how to repair, there are spare parts for them,” she said.

Cooper added that one of the problems with sending Western-designed tanks is the complexity of their maintenance and technical support, noting that when supplying Kiev with certain types of weapons, the US wants to make sure that the Ukrainian army has everything it needs to maintain them.

Earlier Politico reported that the German Bundestag once again postponed “indefinitely” the vote on the transfer of German Leopard main battle tanks (MBT) and Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) to Ukraine. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in an interview with the Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper also confirmed the refusal to deliver modern German tanks to Ukraine.
