EU permanent presidents agree on sanctions against Russia - Politico

The permanent presidents of European Union countries have reached an agreement on an eighth package of sanctions against Russia, including a cap on Russian oil prices. This was reported on Tuesday, October 4, by Politico newspaper.

According to the newspaper, the final version of the draft will be approved on Wednesday, 5 October. At the same time, a decision on the actual price or price range within the measures against oil from Russia has not yet been made.

Thus the new package includes measures against the Russian steel industry. It also bans EU citizens from holding senior positions in Russian state-owned companies.

The newspaper notes that Malta, Greece and Cyprus, whose tankers carry most of Russia’s oil, have expressed concern about the impact of restrictions on Russian oil. Therefore they have been granted some concessions, according to the draft document.

According to the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, the country has ensured that such measures do not apply to pipeline oil. It also insisted that the sanctions against Russia should not apply to nuclear energy and the construction of a nuclear power plant in Paks.
