Residents in East German cities have begun displaying German flags next to Russian ones, and the letter Z has often started appearing on cars with Ukrainian number plates. This is reported in Der Spiegel.

“The sanctions observed by most EU countries are being rejected. The “German-Russian friendship” – an issue never discussed before, a term irritatingly reminiscent of “German-Soviet friendship” – is on the radar,” the publication notes.

According to the paper, people in eastern Germany, disillusioned with the capitalism introduced in 1990, feel as much a loser in the Cold War of 1946-89 as the Russians.

“There is an experience that many people in East Germany share with the Russians: to be among the losers in history, to harbour illusions and to be disillusioned, if not outright robbed, by the victorious West,” the article says.
