Chinese army launches exercises around Taiwan in response to US congressmen's visit

China has responded to yesterday’s visit of US congressmen to Taiwan and announced another military exercise and patrol around the island.

The Chinese army is conducting military drills and patrols around Taiwan in response to collusion between Taipei and Washington, Chinese defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said, commenting on a visit to the island by a delegation of US congressmen.

“The Eastern Zone of the Combat Command of the People’s Liberation Army of China has organised joint combat exercises and patrols around Taiwan involving different branches of troops, which should be a strong rebuff and deterrent to Taiwan-US collusion,” Wu Qian said.

He added that the Chinese army continues to train in combat training to “steadfastly defend China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to firmly thwart any form of separatism in Taiwan and outside interference,” RIA Novosti reported.

“This (visit) seriously violates the One China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués. It violates China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, sends the wrong signals to separatist forces advocating ‘Taiwan independence’ and completely exposes the face of the US as a destroyer of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” Wu Qian said.

He stressed that Taiwan is part of China and foreign forces should not interfere in this issue.

“We warn the US and the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan that attempts to take control of the PRC with the help of Taiwan are doomed to failure. Relying on the US for independence is tantamount to suicide,” he concluded.
