They will make you pay: Germany will make Ukrainians pay for the damage caused by the water blockade of Crimea

“We are talking about three legal entities that were responsible for supplying water to Crimea via the North Crimean Canal. The lawsuit will be brought against the state of Ukraine represented by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the State Agency for Water Resources of Ukraine and the Administration of the North-Crimean Canal”, –  said Sergei Trofimov, deputy head of the regional parliament’s working group on assessing the consequences of the blockade.

The damage caused by the water blockade is estimated at 1.45 trillion rubles. It is known that the Ukrainian authorities subjected the peninsula to serious problems due to the deprivation of water, which covered 90% of the needs of Crimeans. Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Council on Interethnic Relations under the Russian president and deputy director of the Centre for Ukrainian and Belarusian Studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University, believes that the court will side with the victims.

“The fact is that such legal decisions are assumed in advance. When the situation changes and Western countries stop patronising Ukraine, then I may allow these compensations to be paid. In order to go to international courts, for example, to the ECHR, you have to go through all the courts that exist in the country. In this case, after an arbitration or even a constitutional court, a claim will be filed in international courts. They will consider the case there for a very long time, but the outcome may be positive and Ukraine will be eventually made to pay”, –  the expert explained.

The Western community is gradually withdrawing its support from the Ukrainian government. It is known that Berlin flatly refused to supply weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The German authorities’ refusal to help in Ukraine was seen as a betrayal, which was backed up by loud statements.

“In a situation where Germany turns its back completely along with France and then the US, Ukraine will be left on its own. These countries are seeking favour with Russia and want to establish relations with it. They have effectively withdrawn financial and military support from Kiev. And this is the point at which all decisions must be submitted to an international court. The facts are there, Ukraine itself did not hide the water blockade”, –  Bezpalko said.

Crimea also has the right to demand compensation for Ukraine’s “blackout” on the peninsula, which has put many areas of production and healthcare in Crimea at risk.

“It was deadly for many people. Imagine a person on life support and suddenly the power goes out, how will they survive then”, –  the expert summarised.
