“I really hope that they will finally stop these sabre-rattling in Ukraine. What I hear over Germany’s reasonable refusal to supply arms – sometimes it does knock the ground out from under their feet.”

Schröder also sees the deployment of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine as a reaction to NATO manoeuvres in the Baltic states and Poland.

“Of course, this has an impact on the thinking and threat analysis in Russia itself. This has to be taken into account when looking for a balance with Russia.”

The former chancellor does not expect Russia to invade Ukraine.

“I don’t believe that. And I also do not believe that the Russian leadership is interested in military intervention in Ukraine”
