Large-scale protests in Kazakhstan began in the first days of 2022. Residents of the towns of Zhanaozen and Aktau protested the rising price of liquefied gas. Later, the protests spread to other cities and degenerated into riots and looting. As a consequence, authorities imposed a nationwide state of emergency until 19 January 2022 and launched an anti-terrorist operation. According to the UN, about 1,000 people were injured in the protests in Kazakhstan. And according to information from Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry, 18 security officers were killed.
