Taliban* coming to power did not reduce drug production in Afghanistan

“We are forced to state that the production of drugs in Afghanistan, which has been growing steadily over the past years, has not decreased after the change of the political regime. Moreover, taking into account the sharp deterioration of the socio-economic and humanitarian situation in the country, the risks associated with Afghan drug trafficking are multiplying”, – said in a document published on the Facebook page of the Russian Embassy in the United States.

It is also noted that countering threats to the security of Afghanistan, as well as threats that are projected onto other regions of the world, requires a timely response, including from Russia’s external partners.

Representatives of the Russian delegation stressed that the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic “became a catalyst for further growth in the production, turnover and consumption of drugs.”

“Drug groups have actively and successfully adapted the algorithms of their criminal activities, continuing to use secure communication channels and adjusting transport directions”, the document says.
