“AUKUS is a partnership for sharing technology and capabilities, not a military alliance or a security pact. It is a valuable opportunity to re-emphasise Australia’s priorities in the Indo-Pacific region, which are freedom, openness, stability, security and inclusiveness”, –  Payne said in an online briefing for journalists.

She said AUKUS would enable the Australian government to deliver the most meaningful outcomes for Australia’s national interests in the history of relations with the United States.

Under the agreements, the Australian government terminated a $66 billion contract with France for nuclear-powered submarines. Australia now plans to build submarines using American and British technology. According to experts, this has become “a real slap in the face for Paris”.
