Chinese media accused US of hiding data on coronavirus

China is convinced that the first cases of coronavirus infection in the United States occurred long before the outbreak of infection in Wuhan, writes Global Times China.

Chinese media accused US of hiding data on coronavirus

As an argument, the media cites the fact that in Florida, the current epicenter of COVID-19 in the United States, data on 171 patients “disappeared” in May 2020. They were later restored, but information about the onset of symptoms was classified. Moreover, according to journalists, these people had signs of the disease back in January-February 2020 – more than a month before the authorities reported the first registered cases of COVID-19 in the state.

“At least 26 people showed symptoms in late December [2019] or January, at least eight of them did not travel or come into contact with other infected. <…> The first cases of infection in Florida may have occurred earlier than in Wuhan, but then the United States did not regard them as COVID-19 or deliberately ignored them”, – said scientist Eric Toner.

As noted by Global Times China, the US government tried to silence those who wanted to know the truth. For example, the home of analyst Rebecca Jones, who refused to manipulate Florida data in May 2020, was visited by the police and taken away all the equipment.

Wuhan University virologist Yang Zhanqiu, in turn, admitted that the United States withheld information about SARS-CoV-2 in order to “politicize the pandemic and blacken China.” He believes that politicians in the United States are still busy spreading slander and the theory of “laboratory leaks”, but do not pay attention to the dire epidemiological situation in their country.

“A pandemic is a scientific problem. Science is rational, and this is the business of scientists, not politicians,” he concluded.

Earlier, Hill, citing the conclusion of House Republicans who investigated the coronavirus, reported that SARS-CoV-2 originated in a laboratory and Wuhan, and spread around the world due to a leak. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the report was based on lies and distorted facts.
