German foreign minister says China uses financial resources to increase influence in the world

China is using economic and financial resources to strengthen its political influence in the world. The EU has to offer alternatives of its projects to the countries where the Chinese are active, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said this on Monday on arrival at a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

“We see China using the economic and financial means at its disposal everywhere in the world to increase its influence, including political influence. There is nothing to complain about, but we need to offer our own alternative,” he said, noting that this applies to Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Africa and Latin America. –  “We have to come up with concrete proposals, concrete projects. This we must coordinate closely with the US. Now is the time to act not only in words, but also in deeds”, –  said Maas.

For his part, his colleague from Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, called China “a challenge for Europe, a challenge for America”, but spoke out against the EU’s hostile policy towards Beijing. In his view, the EU should be guided more by its own interests based on shared values and taking into account the human rights situation in the PRC.
