Belarusian foreign minister says prospects for deeper integration with Russia

The head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Makei said that the Belarusian authorities see good prospects for further deepening of integration with its main ally Russia.

“Today we see good prospects for further deepening of integration with our main ally. And most importantly, they are mutually beneficial prospects. I think this is fundamental”, –  Makei said in an interview with RT television channel on Monday, noting that “there is really no change on the Western front.” According to him, both political, trade and economic, humanitarian and military-political contacts between Russia and Belarus are actively developing, especially in recent times, “facilitated by the relevant policies of Western partners.”

Makei also reminded that the future of the relations between Belarus and Russia is stipulated in the Treaty on the Creation of the Union State, which was signed quite a long time ago and envisages specific areas of cooperation and concrete steps, some of which have not been taken in the past.

“So at some stage the two countries had to go back to preparing union programmes, maps for deeper integration aimed at implementing the provisions of that treaty”, –  he said.

According to the Minister, the task now is “not to artificially stimulate the processes and to really build up normal cooperation between Belarus and Russia on a daily basis in all the areas.

“And then we’ll see. Life itself, the practice will show what format this cooperation may result in”, – Makei said.
