White House says Kiev misinterpreted Biden's words about Ukraine in NATO

According to TASS, the White House National Security Council (NSC) told the Axios news portal that Kiev had misinterpreted US President Joe Biden’s words on Monday about the idea of Ukraine joining NATO.

“As the portal explained, the White House and the Ukrainian government “initially issued contradictory” statements following Monday’s phone conversation between the US and Ukrainian presidents. According to Kiev’s version, the head of the Washington administration “stressed <…> the importance of providing the Ukrainian state with a NATO Membership Action Plan”, –  the report said.

The White House denies that Biden expressed support for such a step during a phone conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Ukraine has misinterpreted the statement and made the correction”, –  the NSC told Axios.

The Ukrainian government said in an amended statement on Monday evening that “Zelensky noted the importance of Ukraine’s provision of a Membership Action Plan”. However, as the portal notes, the White House declined to comment on whether Biden supported the idea of offering Ukraine a Membership Action Plan this year.
