The head of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) Gianni Buquicchio said that the commission does not support the amendments to the bill on false declaration adopted by the Verkhovna Rada
“Bill No 4651 was passed a few days ago. However, the amended version changed deprivation of liberty to restriction of freedom, the property of relatives of civil servants was excluded from mandatory declaration and from the liability of civil servants. These are negative amendments that the Venice Commission does not support”, – Buquicchio said at the Democracy in Action conference.
He also stressed that the Law on the Judiciary and the Status of Judges does not comply with the recommendations of the Venice Commission. According to him, the High Council of Justice should be vetted before it is entrusted with the appointment of the High Qualification Commission. Buquicchio said this was mandatory otherwise “judicial reform will be doomed”.
