European Parliament calls for Balkan countries to be admitted to EU

European Parliament speaker David Sassoli said in an interview with media group Funke on Sunday that he was in favour of the Balkan states joining the European Union (EU), TASS reported.

“Enlargement can bring huge benefits for the region and for Europe as a whole”, – he said, describing the EU enlargement as “a positive project of peace and prosperity”.

Sassoli stressed that the pace of accession of the Western Balkan countries will depend on their meeting the criteria for EU membership.

Recall that the official candidates for EU membership are Albania, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro and Turkey. For none of these countries has even theoretically been defined a possible timetable for accession to the EU. In autumn 2018, then European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that Serbia and Montenegro could join the EU before 2025.
