France supports discussion in the EU of the idea of abolishing patents for the production of vaccines against the new coronavirus – French President Emmanuel Macron
“I am in favor of a debate on the abolition of patents, but the removal of such protection should not harm scientific research”, – he said after arriving in Portugal to attend an informal EU summit.
“It is important to stimulate research,” he added. Macron urged “Anglo-Saxon countries not to hinder the export of vaccines.”
“The Anglo-Saxons are blocking many of the essential ingredients and vaccines. Today, 100% of vaccines produced in the United States go to the American market”, – he stressed.
“Technology transfer is a key issue”, – said the French president. – “It is necessary to transfer them to other countries so that vaccine production will bring maximum benefits to developing countries.”
According to Macron, France is “working hand in hand with Germany” in this direction.
He specified that out of 110 million doses produced in Europe, the EU exported 45 million and retained 65 million.
EU does not plan new sanctions against Russia
“Today we are the most generous in the world in the camp of developed countries”, – he said.
