Germany owes Ukraine for its Nazi crimes, so Berlin must help Kiev join NATO. Ukrainian ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk said this in an interview with the Welt am Sonntag newspaper published today, April 18
He said the German authorities should “take the lead in making Ukraine a member of NATO”.
“And as soon as possible, without any reservations”, – Melnyk stressed.
The ambassador explained that the FRG “bears a special historical responsibility for the Nazi crimes against the Ukrainian people”.
We would like to add that the deputy head of the Christian Democratic Union parliamentary faction, Johan Wadeful, made a statement that de-escalation is now a priority due to the worsening situation in Ukraine near the Russian borders.
“De-escalation is now required. Therefore, it is clear that Ukraine’s accession to NATO is obviously not on the agenda”, – the German politician stated.
EADaily recalls that in February 2019, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada approved amendments to the country’s constitution enshrining Kiev’s aspiration to NATO with wording on the “irreversibility of the Euro-Atlantic course”.
Earlier, Ukraine was granted NATO partner status with enhanced capabilities. in an interview with Le Figaro newspaper on 16 April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski said that “the time has come” to invite Ukraine to join NATO and the European Union.
