Dozens of Turkish Navy veterans oppose Erdogan’s plans

The ruling Turkish party has been criticized for Islamizing the army and trying to revise the Montreux Convention.

The convention was signed back in 1936. Thanks to her, Turkey controls the Black Sea straits of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, deciding which ships will be able to enter the water area. The Montreux Convention is considered the biggest diplomatic victory in military circles, but Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seeking to build the Istanbul Canal, thus creating another route to the Black Sea.

The new channel will not be subject to the convention almost a century ago, and the ruling elite of Turkey announced that it is open for revision of the agreement.

In this regard, 103 retired admirals of the Turkish Navy condemned Erdogan’s party, calling for them to abandon actions that threaten the Montreux Convention.

“We believe that any actions and statements that could lead to the Montreux Convention, which is so important for Turkey’s survival, should be avoided, should be avoided”, – the statement said.
