State Department advises Americans not to travel to Myanmar

US authorities on Friday advised Americans not to travel to Myanmar due to the situation in the country. This is said in a statement issued by the State Department.

Last August, the foreign ministry advised US citizens to reconsider possible travel to the republic.

“Do not travel to Myanmar because of COVID-19 and civil unrest and armed conflict”, –  the statement said. The State Department added that the country’s military had “arrested and overthrown elected government officials”. Protests and demonstrations against what has happened will continue in the country, according to US authorities.

The UN Security Council in a statement issued on 4 February expressed deep concern over the situation in Myanmar and called for the immediate release of all detained political leaders of the republic.
