The State Duma called on the warring parties in Myanmar to dialogue

Sergei Zheleznyak, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, called the situation in Myanmar extremely explosive, where a military coup d’etat took place due to disagreements between political forces after the elections, and called on the opposing sides to dialogue and renounce violence.

“Russia is watching the events in Myanmar with concern. We call on the opposing sides to dialogue, renunciation of violence, respect for human rights and public peace”, – Zheleznyak told RIA Novosti on Monday.

According to the politician, the situation in Myanmar “can be qualified as extremely explosive”.

“The most important thing now is to prevent clashes between citizens and representatives of the security forces, and to those who are in power, to observe the rule of law and the principles of democracy, to which the armed forces of Myanmar declare their loyalty”, – the deputy added.

The parliamentarian also noted that the situation in Myanmar requires attention and assessment by legal international organizations, primarily the UN.

“The world community must help normalize the situation in the country, prevent the political crisis from escalating into civil confrontation. Also, external forces must not be allowed to exert destructive pressure on Myanmar society, which can be used to collapse the country and lose statehood. A peaceful settlement of the crisis on the basis of the negotiation process of conflicting political forces. Only the people of Myanmar have the right to decide the fate of their country”, – the parliamentarian said.
