Chinese bombers and fighters in the framework of exercises in the air defense zone of Taiwan simulated a strike on an American aircraft carrier, it follows from US intelligence data.
According to the Financial Times, the incident at the exercise occurred a few days after the inauguration of the new US President Joe Biden, held on January 20. According to preliminary information, China has sent a total of 26 aircraft to the southwestern part of Taiwan’s air defense zone in a few days.
According to media reports, during the exercise, the Chinese army used a group of US ships led by the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt as a “simulated target”. Also, according to people familiar with US intelligence, the pilots of the Chinese bombers confirmed orders about the target, as well as the launch of an anti-ship missile at the aircraft carrier.
Earlier, the US State Department said that Washington will continue to provide assistance to Taiwan, including weapons, due to military pressure from China.
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, China has opposed any official contacts between the US and Taiwan. The agency warned that if the States maintained their policy on the island, they would “pay a heavy price”.
In 1949, as a result of the Chinese Civil War, the Kuomintang forces led by the head of the Government of the Republic of China, Chiang Kai-shek, moved to Taiwan. Since that time, the forces of the partially recognized republic control the island, but claim all of China.
