Media: Rio de Janeiro mayor arrested over corruption case

The mayor of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, was arrested on Tuesday in a corruption case, Globo television reported. This was reported by TV channel Globo.

According to its reports, police showed up at the mayor’s house in the western part of Rio de Janeiro in the early morning with an arrest warrant. At least two other people have been taken into custody as part of the same investigation. They are businessman Rafael Alves and former investigator Fernando Morais. They are all suspected of organising a criminal scheme to embezzle funds from the city coffers and extort money from businesses.

According to investigators, in one of the episodes of the case Alves used his connections with senior municipal officials to promise private companies assistance in obtaining lucrative contracts with the mayor’s office. For these services, he took money from the businessmen, which was then allegedly distributed to all parties involved in the scheme.

Crivella has been mayor since January 2017. In November, he lost the second round of municipal elections in which he sought re-election. The mayor’s mandate expires on 1 January 2021. Prior to his political career, Crivella was an evangelical pastor and sang in the religious gospel genre.
