Russia’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrei Kelin, speaking on Friday at an online conference on international relations organised by the British organisation Westminster Russia forum said that Russia was ready to normalise relations with Britain, but on one condition.
“Russian-British political relations are going through a difficult time. Naturally, they do not correspond to the level of relations that have developed between the peoples of our countries, they do not meet the potential and demand from the public. Russia is certainly interested in normalizing political contacts, if Britain is ready for that, but it is not going to impose itself either”, – Kelin said.
“Despite, to put it bluntly, not the best political atmosphere and sanctions, economic interaction, trade, investment in general continue to develop in the common interest. According to my observations, the Russian government fully supports this attitude of business circles,” the diplomat added.
Kelin also touched on Britain’s exit from the European Union. Britain left the European Union on the night of February 1, but since then a so-called transition period has been in force, during which countries continue to cooperate as if there had been no Brexit. This phase ends on the night of 1 January 2021.

“It is already necessary to start working together now on a roadmap between the two countries on further trade and economic interaction, because some [aspects] of it need to be updated, some [need to be] placed in a different framework, this work needs to be done”, – the Russian ambassador said.
