Paris can begin to clear the heap of problems created by it even without amending the constitution, only desire is needed
The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, said that the French constitution must be changed if its provisions do not allow taking the necessary measures to combat terrorism
According to him, this war cannot be won by “peaceful laws”. He also drew a parallel between terrorism and coronavirus:
“We have deprived the French of certain freedoms that they agreed to in order to fight the virus. Islamo-fascism is a virus, bombs are constantly exploding on our territory ”.
The emotions of the mayor of the city in which the terrorist killed three parishioners of the cathedral are understandable. But there are doubts that the correct conclusions will be drawn. First, no constitutional provisions forced Paris to import migrants into the country en masse without integrating them into French society. Nobody demanded that the French authorities pursue a policy of multiculturalism, which is now recognized as a failure in many EU countries. Paris can begin to clear the heap of problems created by it even without amending the Basic Law, the only thing needed is desire.
Secondly, there are fears that the French authorities may take the easy path and toughen the life of all religious confessions indiscriminately. The Catholics of Nice, for example, were unpleasantly surprised that the mayor of Estrosi, in response to the terrorist attack, ordered to seal the temples under the pretext of security. France is already the most secular state in Europe. Once a faithful daughter of the Catholic Church, it has turned into a country where churches are closed due to the lack of priests and parishioners, and the interests of the Christian community, which makes up more than 60% of the population, are ignored.
France must remember its historical roots. If such amendments to the Constitution are adopted, only then they can be welcomed.
