EU imposed sanctions against two Russians and the “center of the GRU”

The EU imposed sanctions on two Russian citizens and the so-called “85th Main Center of Special Services of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation”, allegedly for a cyber attack on the Bundestag in 2015. This is said in the statement of the EU Council.

“The Council today imposed restrictive measures against two individuals and one body who were responsible or participated in the cyber attack on the German federal parliament in April and May 2015. This cyberattack targeted the parliament’s information system and affected its ability to function for several days. A significant amount of data was stolen, as well as the mail accounts of several members of parliament, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, were affected”, – the Council notes.

The Official Journal of the EU states that the sanctions are being imposed on Igor Kostyukov and Dmitry Badin.

The UK, following the EU, is imposing sanctions against two Russians and a “GRU unit” due to a cyber attack on the Bundestag in 2015, the country’s Foreign Ministry said.
