77 million “free” tests on COVID-19 were conducted in the USA – now Americans get bills

For several months, advertising has been widely urging Americans that coronavirus tests, so essential to contain the pandemic, are free. Now people are forced to pay from a few dollars to a few thousand for them.

This is what The New York Times reports, whose journalists managed to communicate with several deceived citizens.

Sarah Goldstone told that she was tested in Massachusetts, but now her insurance company “refuses to share the cost of visits related to testing for COVID-19”. Kelly Daisley decided to take the test after seeing an advertisement at a bus stop near her house in New York City. Some time later, she received a $2,718 bill.

“I saw so many commercials that said the test was everywhere, it’s free, you don’t need insurance”, –  said 47-year-old Kelly Daisley.

Extensive testing has been taking place in the U.S. for several months now. During this time, a huge number of citizens have faced “holes” in new government programs adopted in a hurry against the backdrop of the pandemic.

To date, the U.S. has conducted about 77 million tests. At the same time, according to the data of the medical company “Castlight”, about 2,4% of citizens, who passed the test, received an invoice from their insurers for partial or full payment for the test. Thus, the number of deceived Americans may exceed 1.8 million.
