President of Serbia extended the wait for EU membership until 2026

The Serbian President is on a one-day visit to Brussels. The agenda of the visit includes meetings with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leien, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Oliver Varkheli, and the EU Special Representative for the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina and other regional issues in the Western Balkans, Miroslav Lajčák.

Previously, Vucic has repeatedly stated that he expects Serbia to join the European Union in 2020, then the expected date is 2025.

“I will not give details, but I am satisfied with the nuances we went through in our conversation with Von der Lajen, and I am sure that we are optimistically entering a new phase of EU-Serbia relations”, –  Vucic quoted the national television as saying.

“I expect that at the end of the mandate of the new (not yet formed after the elections of June 21 – ed.) government in 2024 we will complete the negotiations on accession to the EU and it is quite real that Serbia will become a member of the EU by 2026”, –  said the Serbian president.
