The United States has recognized four Chinese media as foreign missions

“In order to ensure greater transparency of the Communist Party of China (CPC) activities in the United States, I have ordered four additional Chinese propaganda media to be designated as foreign missions”, –  Pompeo tweeted.

The State Department said in a statement that the status was given to China Central Television, the newspapers Zhenmin Zhibao and The Global Times and the China News Service.

The State Department noted that these entities meet the definition of a foreign mission in accordance with the Law on Foreign Missions, which means that they are “largely owned or effectively controlled” by a foreign government, that is, in this case the Chinese government.

At the same time, the statement of the U.S. Foreign Ministry notes that such a decision is not based on any publications of these media and does not impose restrictions on the work of these media in the United States.

The State Department explains that organizations recognized by foreign missions “must comply with certain administrative requirements, which also apply to foreign embassies and consulates in the United States.

The State Department recalls that in February 2020, Xinhua China News Agency, China International Radio, China Global Television Network, China Daily Distribution Corporation and Hai Tian Development USA were granted this status.
