The United States continues to put pressure on Syria to thwart the peace process in the SAR, to deprive the country’s authorities of the opportunity to restore statehood and the economy, Sergei Zheleznyak, member of the State Duma’s international affairs committee said commenting on the expansion of sanctions against the republic.
The US President Donald Trump signed into law, which became known as Caesar, at the end of 2019. It entered into force on June 1 and includes sanctions affecting almost all areas of the Syrian economy. The sanctions list was expanded on June 17, 14 people got under restriction, including the spouse of Syrian President Bashar Assad Asma Assad and his sister Bushra Assad, as well as 21 organizations.
“The United States continues to put pressure on Syria in the hope of hindering the process of a peaceful settlement in the country and splitting Syrian society, trying to deprive the country’s authorities of the opportunity to restore statehood and the economy. At the same time, the United States gave itself the right to be present in Syria and to maintain military contingent there to control the situation”, – Zheleznyak was quoted in his press service.
According to the deputy, Washington is taking such measures contrary to the interests of the Syrian people and without the consent of the country’s legitimate leadership. Zheleznyak added that the Caesar law is directly aimed at undermining the Syrian economy.
