Grenella was repeatedly reproached for interfering in the internal affairs of Germany. At some point, the vice president of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Kubicki, even demanded that the diplomat be declared persona non grata.

For example, in mid-January 2019, Grenell sent letters to German companies warning him that sanctions could be imposed by Washington because of support for the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. He also criticized the authorities of Germany for not intending to bring defense spending to 2% of GDP. At the end of May 2020, the US ambassador criticized German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas. The German minister, according to the diplomat, incorrectly reacted to Washington’s decision to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty.
