The US military was not even able to provide protection to a group of officials who arrived from Washington, including the Under Secretary of Defense.
According to Middle Eastern media, the pro-Iranian Asbat al-Tiran group operating in Iraq reported that it was preparing a major attack on US officials. Earlier, the American delegation, led by the deputy head of the Pentagon, arrived at the Iraqi Ain al-Assad military base, where the American armed forces are stationed. The militants were ready to take advantage of this and hit the base.
The group noted that the plan was thought out so that even American drones could not notice the activity of the fighters. Nevertheless, the attack had to be abandoned, as the Iraqi military, who were also at the base, were also exposed to the threat.
As News Front previously reported, the US military presence has recently turned into an escalation of tension for Iraq. At the end of last year, the US military base near Iraqi Kirkuk was shelled, which led to the death of an American citizen. In response, the American armed forces launched a punitive action by striking at the objects of the local Shiite formation. US actions have led to massive protests. It even reached the assault on the American embassy in Baghdad.
Coronavirus: Trump to defy ‘voluntary’ advice for Americans to wear masks
The situation worsened after the United States launched an air strike in Iraq, which killed Iranian General Kassem Suleimani. Then even the Iraqi authorities began to demand the withdrawal of Americans from the country. At the same time, shelling of US military facilities did not stop.
