ASEAN Secretary General to visit Russia and hold talks with Lavrov

Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Lim Jock Hoi will hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a working visit to Moscow February 2-4, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“He will hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as well as with the leadership of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, and the Ministry of Finance of Russia. A meeting is scheduled with the chairman of the board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). There are meetings with representatives of business circles and a visit to the ASEAN Center at MGIMO”, – notes the message.

The development of relations with ASEAN is among the priorities of Russian foreign policy in the Asian direction, the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized.

“In 2018, Russian-ASEAN relations reached the level of strategic partnership. The result was a tightening of coordination with the” top ten “at leading multilateral platforms, including the UN, on pressing global and regional issues. The focus is on the formation of an open Asia-Pacific region and a balanced architecture of equal and indivisible security, promotion within the framework of the EAC (East Asian Summit – ed.) of a multilateral dialogue on this subject”, – the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

In addition, in the field of counteracting new challenges and threats, the Russian competent departments provide assistance to ASEAN law enforcement agencies and special services in training personnel, and conduct refresher courses for them in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
The Russian Foreign Ministry recalled the development of trade, economic and investment relations of Russia with the “top ten” with an emphasis on high-tech and innovative component.

“In 2018, trade with ASEAN countries grew by 6.8% and reached $ 19.6 billion. The Russian economy received $ 1.4 billion of direct investment from ASEAN countries (cumulative volume – $ 4.3 billion), a similar amount Russia has invested in the region (cumulative volume of $ 3.9 billion). Joint projects are being carried out in the field of energy, agriculture, support for small and medium enterprises, and environmental protection”, – the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
