Borrel did not rule out EU military mission to implement armistice in Libya

The Head of the EU diplomacy, Josep Borrel, did not rule out the possibility of holding a European military mission to implement and monitor the ceasefire in Libya.

“If there is a ceasefire in Libya, the EU should be ready to help with the implementation and monitoring of this ceasefire – possibly also with the help of the military, for example, as a part of the European mission”, – Borrel said in an interview with the German publication Spiegel.

According to him, over the past six months, Russia and Turkey have significantly strengthened their influence in Libya and use it.

“Vladimir Putin and Tayyip Erdogan at least managed to prepare a temporary ceasefire between the warring parties in Libya”, – he said.

Borrell emphasized that at the conference on Libya on January 19 in Berlin, decisive steps should be taken to move forward in this process.

Earlier, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said that Greece was ready to help in the future of Libya, in particular, by the participation of Greek forces in the European operation to monitor the arms embargo and the transfer of mercenaries to Libya.

After the overthrow and assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya virtually ceased to function as a single state. Dual power reigns in the country now. The parliament elected by the people sits in the east, and in the west, in the capital Tripoli, the Government of National Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union, rules. The authorities of the eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the Libyan National Army of Marshal Khalifa Haftar. Since April last year, the LNA has been conducting an offensive in Tripoli.

In Berlin on January 19 conferences on the settlement in Libya will be held. Representatives of Russia, the USA, Turkey, Egypt, the EU, the UN and other countries are invited to the conference. GNA Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj and Libyan National Army Chief Marshal Haftar said they would attend the conference. The Berlin conference will be held after the inter-Libyan talks in Moscow with the participation of representatives of the Russian Federation and Turkey.
