Five Italian troops were injured due to an improvised explosive device mined in Iraq, the Italian Defense Ministry’s General Staff said Sunday.
The military was part of the Iraqi security forces training mission in the fight against terrorist groups. On Sunday morning, an improvised explosive device went off during the movement of the Italian unit.
“The five injured military personnel were immediately provided assistance. They were evacuated and delivered to the hospital by the US helicopters, also included in the coalition (to combat ISIS*)”, – the General Staff said in a statement.
Three of the five wounded are in serious condition, but their lives are in danger. Their relatives are informed about the incident, the development of the situation is monitored by Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini.
