Hundreds took to the streets of the Bulgarian capital Sofia on Monday to protest against the nomination of current Deputy Prosecutor-General Ivan Geshev to be Bulgaria’s next prosecutor general.

Protesters first assembled in front of Sofia’s Court of Justice carrying banners and chanting, linking Geshev to the mafia and demanding his resignation.

“We have a cowboy in town. They are proposing a cowboy to be the next General Prosecutor,” said Velislav Velichkov, a member of the ‘Justice for all’ organization who had organised the protest.

Protesters later marched through the city to Sofia’s Independence Square.

Geshev, who protesters claim has links to the Bulgarian mafia, is currently the only nominee for the post, which is scheduled for October 24.
