Around 45,000 teachers from primary and secondary school hit the streets in the Chilean capital of Santiago on Thursday, as their protest continued for the third consecutive week. Many protesters walked peacefully along the pedestrian street of Paseo Bulnes, but incidents were reported when some attacked police forces, hurling objects and using batons against their vehicles. Authorities deployed tear gas and water cannons in response. The indefinite strike proclaimed by the Chilean teachers’ Association is seeking an improvement in working conditions, better benefits and to protest against making history, physical education and arts classes optional, among other issues.
