Poroshenko Accuses Opposition of Attempts to Make Ukraine ‘addicted to Russian Gas’

Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has lashed out at opposition politicians Yuri Boyko and Viktor Medvedchuk, members of the Opposition Platform – For Life party, for their visit to Moscow where they held talks with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

“They are discussing the economy. They are discussing how to make Ukraine addicted to Russian gas. They are discussing the alliances which will be set up after presidential and parliamentary elections,” Poroshenko said in the city of Chernovtsy on Saturday.

On Friday, Boyko and Medvedchuk held talks with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev focusing on how to revive trade and restore economic ties between Russia and Ukraine. Gas supplies to Ukraine were also on the table of the talks. Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller, who was attending the meeting, said that Gazprom was ready to start negotiations on direct supplies of gas for Ukrainian consumers.

After the meeting, Medvedchuk told Ukrainian reporters that the price of Russia gas might be lowered by 25% for Ukraine.
