Budapest sent NATO countries an official memorandum on protection of Hungarians living in Ukrainian Transcarpathia. The document, prepared by the government suggests exempting national minorities living on the territory of Ukraine from the impact of certain laws.

Kiev and Budapest are in an acute stage of the conflict because of the law on education, which significantly curtails the opportunities for learning in any language other than ukrainian.

In the next three years the country expects to fully switch to teaching only in Ukrainian.

Governments of several states, including Hungary and Romania, said that this law violates the rights of national minorities living in Ukraine.

As REN-TV notes, Moscow also sees violation of the Constitution and international obligations of Ukraine in that law.

Experts call this a “linguicide”. At the same time, all Ukrainian official correspondence is required to be in Ukrainian, with state officials, public service and journalists forbidden from using languages other than ukrainian in their work
