The United States Senate voted to proceed on legislation in a bid to avert a government shutdown in Washington DC on Friday, after Republican Senator Rand Paul delayed the voting procedure to a two-year budget deal.

The procedural vote passed 73-26. The US Senate then proceeded to vote on the two-year budget agreement. The measure passed 71-28 and was sent to the House of Representatives, where it will have to be approved in order to avoid a complete government shutdown.
