An investigation into alleged preparations for a terrorist attack at a Christmas market in the northeastern French city of Reims is underway, according to the France 3 TV channel.

French authorities detained six people in Reims, as well as in the prefectures of Aube and Ardennes on Tuesday and Wednesday over suspicion of planning a terrorist act, the France 3 TV channel reported.

Local media also added that weapons were seized during the operation.

However, officials have not yet determined how real the threat of an attack was, with the Reims prosecutor saying in a statement that they have no evidence at the moment that could be transferred to the Central Counterterrorism Department of the Prosecution Service.

Earlier this week, another six suspects were detained during an anti-terror operation in Germany. According to local media, the detainees, suspected of connection to the Daesh terrorist group, were planning an attack at a Christmas market in the German city of Essen.
