Gabriel calls on Moscow to influence militants in Donbass.
Sanctions from Russia need to be removed little by little in parallel with at least small shifts in the implementation of the Minsk agreements. This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Focus publication by German Foreign Minister Zigmar Gabriel, the Correspondent reports.
He believes that such a step would help show the Kremlin the benefits of implementing the Minsk agreements.
“According to the existing decisions of the European Union, Minsk agreements must be implemented 100% before 100% cancellation of sanctions (against Russia – Ed.). I think it’s unrealistic. It would be right to lift sanctions gradually, as small shifts. That steps towards peace are beneficial,” Gabriel said.
Gabriel also noted that “Russia must use its influence on separatists, and the US should influence Ukraine.” According to him, the United States has a great influence on Ukraine.
“The United States has a great influence on Ukraine, and I personally do not belong to those who would be happy if the Americans stepped aside from world affairs.” The US Secretary of State Tillerson successfully conducts foreign policy, “the German FM said.
Recall, the US Senate on June 15 approved a bill providing for new sanctions against Russia and Iran. The bill, in particular, proposes to reduce the maximum period for market financing of Russian banks under sanctions, up to 14 days, and the subordination companies of the oil and gas sector – up to 30 days.
On June 28, the Council of the European Union approved a decision to extend for another six months economic sanctions against Russia for its failure to comply with the Minsk Agreements. EU sanctions, therefore, are extended until January 31, 2018.
