The Syrian opposition’s High Negotiations Committee (HNC) has demonstrated high interest in the discussion of the settlement in Syria – on Thursday it will become clear whether the Damascus delegation is prepared to lead serious discussions, the UN envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura said after the consultations with HNC delegation.
“It was a very useful meeting covering many subjects. I was impressed by the level of depth we were able to get. So, I think it was quite useful,” he said.
“Tomorrow (Thursday) is an important day. I will meet with the government and I will see if they are also capable and willing to go deeply into the agenda. Meanwhile the opposition is obviously interested in going deeply,” de Mistura added.
On Wednesday evening, de Mistura unexpectedly arrived at Crown Plaza hotel, where the HNC delegation is staying. De Mistura’s meeting with the HNC representatives in Crown Plaza lasted more than two hours.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said earlier that Russia and the Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) have common understanding over further steps needed to resolve the Syria crisis.
“The meeting was constructive. There is common understanding that we need to move ahead in resolving the Syria crisis,” Gatilov said, adding the sides outlined their approaches to finding solutions to the Syria crisis. The HNC members articulated their own vision of the current round of talks in Geneva.
On February 27, Gatilov arrived in Geneva to attend the High-Level Segment of the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council.
