Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the choice of the Crimean residents who voted for reunification with Russia should be respected avoiding double standards. “It is necessary to respect the choice of people (in Crimea) and not adapt every time international law and the principles of democracy to one’s geopolitical interests,” he said in an interview for Oliver Stone’s documentary titled Ukraine on Fire, which will be aired by the REN TV channel.

Putin recalled that more than 90% of Crimeans voted for reunification with Russia.

“There were no hostilities there (in Crimea), no one shot there,” the Russian leader said. “No one killed anyone.” “Democracy is a policy based on the will of the people,” he stressed. “How is the will of the people determined? In the modern world – with the help of the voting.”.
